UK approves build of three windfarms with total capacity of 300MW

London (Platts)--7Oct2004

Three new wind farms in the UK with a total capacity of 300MW have been
approved, the British Wind Energy Association said Wednesday. United Utilities
and Energi E2 of Denmark have bee given permission to build 30 turbines at
Scarweather Sands, off the coast of Porthcawl in South Wales, with a total
capacity of up to 108MW. Npower renewables has won approval for a 112.5MW
windfarm comprising 45 turbines in Farr, south of Inverness, Scotland.
Airtricity can also go ahead and build a 98MW windfarm near Dunblane, Scotland
with 50 turbines. A BWEA spokeswoman said Scarweather farm was likely to be
completed by 2006 at the latest and that the Farr and Porthcawl farms were
likely to be built by the end of 2005 or early 2006. "An additional 1,700MW of
projects previously consented, on and offshore, are either under or awaiting
construction, meaning that the UK wind industry has a total of 2.5GW of
approved projects, representing some 2.5% of UK electricity supply when
built," the BWEA said
