China to invest in wind and solar power

18-08-04

By 2020, the Chinese government plans to build power generation facilities that use alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power, at a cost of $ 16.9 bn.

In addition to environmental concerns, China is worried that possible energy shortages could undermine economic growth.

More than 70 % of the fuel used in China to produce electricity is coal, which pollutes the environment.
Due to a big rise in demand for gasoline, the government aims to reduce the fuel consumption of new passenger cars by more than 15 % by 2010.
