Taiwan Invests in Waste to Energy Plants

A contract for two waste to energy plants in Taiwan could total as much as US $850 million. Digital Energy & Farming Asia (DEFA) has signed an agreement to join the Quanta Energy Environment Consortium, which received approval from the Taiwan Government to build the 400 MW plants in the country. Quanta received foreign investment approvals from the Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economy in August. After the consortium obtains a business license, the Taipei County Government will transfer a 50-acre site in the Economic Development Zone to the group. The property is valued at US $142,830,000. The second plant will be located in Kao-hsiung County.

The waste-to-energy plants will employ a waste-processing technology that converts municipal, industrial, and residential waste streams into a combustible by-product that is 50 to 80 percent more efficient than burning conventional refuse derived fuels.
