Power companies, conservation groups join on CO2 project

Washington (Platts)--19Apr2004

Twenty-five US power companies are joining conservation groups to develop a
tree-planting project to help offset fossil-fuel power generation's emissions
of carbon dioxide, officials with the new consortium said Monday. The
voluntary group, PowerTree Carbon Company LLC, is taking on about 3,600 acres
of reforestation projects in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas with the goal
of capturing more than 1.6-mil tons of CO2, while providing a habitat for
endangered species, the organizers said. PowerTree Carbon Company, led by the
massive generator of coal-fired power American Electric Power, will invest
$3-mil in bottomland hardwood restoration projects in the three states.
