EC admits EU renewables targets will be missed

London (Platts)--26May2004

The European Commission has formally admitted that the EU will miss its
targets of sourcing 12% of all energy and 22% of all electricity from
renewable sources by 2010, the EC said Wednesday. The EC adopted a new
communication, an early draft of which had already been leaked, on the
progress that the 15 long-standing EU member states had made so far to meet
their targets and on concrete measures that the enlarged 25-member EU should
take to meet future renewables targets. The communication projects that only
18-19% of all EU power consumption will come from renewables by 2010, with
only four countries, Germany, Denmark, Spain and Finland, on track to meet
their individual targets. This communication comes right at the moment when
Europe is facing a new increase of oil prices and is taking measures to curb
greenhouse emissions. It is still time for member states to change their
policies so that renewable energies can finally take off in Europe, said
energy commissioner, Loyola de Palacio.
