German producers highlight power supply concerns after blackouts

London (Platts)--16Jan2004

Blackouts in Europe and the US last summer have brought the issue of security of supply back to the forefront of the industry's and the public's minds, German producers' association VDEW said Friday.

"The extreme heat wave (in Europe) of last summer and the blackouts (have shown) that security of supply cannot be taken for granted and doesn't come free," said Werner Brinker, president of the industry group. He said the electricity industry would face important investment decisions in the next few years to guarantee security of supply in the future and sustain competition in Europe. Politicians, said Brinker, were responsible for paving the way for this to happen. "German needs a framework energy policy cut from one piece of cloth, not a patchwork quilt," said Brinker. "All plans have to guarantee the freedom of the companies (to operate) and the ability of the electricity industry to invest."
