LNG Brings Major Changes to Gas Markets

A dynamic new development in the natural gas business is being analyzed and tracked by Pan EurAsian's North American Terminal Survey of LNG Regasification and Imports (NATS). If the present trend to develop LNG terminals continues on the present path, the US will become increasingly dependent upon natural gas imports from countries other than Canada for the first time in history. All of this implies changes in technology, changes in business practices, and perhaps even changes in who the major suppliers will be in the future. NATS looks at these issues as well as cataloging the present plans of developers to build LNG terminals.

NATS looks at 37 proposed LNG import terminals, plus 5 existing terminals, to track the state of development and the implications of the changes. The changes will be dramatic.

If all the proposed terminals were to be built and put on line as proposed, LNG could supply as much as 60% of the present US demand for natural gas! This is not the only change. NATS also examines the business models being envisioned for the LNG import business. These also have long term, fundamental implications for how natural gas will be bought and sold. For example, there will be far more emphasis on long term contracts than in the past.

This and other factors such as new technologies being developed for the LNG import terminals and the issues regarding siting the terminals combine to make these important issues to track. NATS is an important management tool for doing just this.

The proposed terminals will require about $15 billion of investment during the next 5 years. This is an important new industry, not only for consumers of gas, but also for suppliers, for bankers, for lawyers, and for technical and environmental advisors. It is time to start tracking these opportunities!
