Nord Pool to start green certificates trading by end-March

Nordic power exchange Nord Pool is on schedule to introduce trading in Swedish green certificates by the end of March, senior vice president Morten Johnsrud said Wednesday.

He was, however, not able to give an exact date when trading would begin. Sweden is currently the only Nordic country with a system in place. Norway has said it plans to introduce its own green certificates scheme within two years. The Swedish green certificate is standardized--with one certificate for renewable energy, not different certificates for different kinds of renewables.

This is a feature which, according to Johnsrud, makes it attractive for exchange trading. He added that the likely introduction of a Norwegian scheme was also a reason for Nord Pool to pioneer exchange trading in green certificates, as it would provide additional volume in the market.

Sweden introduced its green certificates scheme in May 2003 to support the production of renewable energy. Nord Pool would issue further information within three to four weeks, Johnsrud said.
