NRC sets up new high-level waste division

Washington (Platts)--24Mar2004

NRC has set up a separate division of high-level waste (HLW) repository safety
in its Office of Nuclear Material Safety & Safeguards (NMSS), giving added
focus to HLW programs, the agency said today. NRC said in a press statement
that the reorganization, which was effective March 22, would enable it to
conduct "a comprehensive licensing program" for the proposed DOE repository at
Yucca Mountain, Nev. DOE is scheduled to submit a repository license
application to NRC in December. The director of the new repository division is
C. William Reamer, who previously was deputy director of NMSS' division of
waste management. John Greeves, previously director of the division of waste
management, now heads a second new division of NMSS, the division of waste
management & environmental protection. That division "will plan, manage and
implement programs related to the decommissioning of sites, management of
low-level radioactive waste activities, and conduct of environmental reviews,"
NRC stated.
