US must increase oil imports

06-01-04 The US Energy Ministry reported that the amount of imported oil amounted to 62,9 % of all oil processed at the US oil processing plants in 2003. In 2002 the share of imported oil came to 61,2 %, in 2001 -- 61,7 %.
The level of oil import in the US reached the showing of 9,6 mm bpd in 2003. The amount of oil processed at the US oil processing plants came to 15,3 mm bpd.

According to estimations from the Energy Ministry it is necessary that in 2004 the level of oil import in the US will grow by 6 % to 10 mm bpd. Otherwise it will be difficult to re-establish commodity reserves of oil to a normal volume.
Saudi Arabia was the key oil supplier to the US in 2003. This country supplied to America on average 1,76 mm bpd. Then follows Mexico (1,57 mm bpd), Canada (1,53 mm barrels) and Venezuela (1,16 mm barrels).
