NRC Turns Aside Harris Plant Claim

Apr 04 - RALEIGH -- The News & Observer

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission rejected a claim by nuclear critics that Progress Energy's Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County is vulnerable to fire risk and should be shut down immediately.

At issue is the fire-retardant insulation wrapped around electrical cables that operate emergency safety equipment. The wrapping material shrunk in laboratory tests under intense heat, exposing power cables underneath.

Progress Energy has until June 2008 to propose a permanent solution for meeting fire safety standards at Shearon Harris.
