Nigerian militants claim another Shell pipeline attack

Cape Town (Platts)--25Apr2008

Nigerian militant group the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger
Delta said Friday it had sabotaged another Shell-operated pipeline in the
Rivers state, the third such attack in the last two weeks.

"Yesterday, Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 22:18 [GMT], heavily armed
fighters from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND)
provided cover for its detonation engineers who successfully sabotaged a major
crude oil pipeline located at Kula river in Rivers state of Nigeria, operated
by Shell Petroleum Development Company," it said in a statement.

A Shell spokesman said the company was investigating the matter.

Earlier this week, Shell was forced to declare force majeure on liftings
of Bonny light crude for the remainder of April and and May, affecting 169,000
b/d of crude output.

A similar attack on Shell's Cawthorne Channel pipeline was carried out
last week by MEND.

"Our candid advice to the oil majors is that they should not waste their
time repairing any lines as we will continue to sabotage them. We have time on
our side and there is so much to be destroyed," MEND said.

It also thanked it "numerous sympathizers inside the military, oil
industry and oil producing communities for facilitating the success of the
ongoing Operation Cyclone (the crippling of the entire Nigerian oil export
industry)."
