Washington governor wants to tackle emissions, energy
jobs
Jan. 16
Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire said on Jan. 14 that she wants to enact
climate change legislation that would require reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions and the creation of clean energy jobs.
Gov. Gregoire´s legislation would require all significant generators of
greenhouse gases to track their emissions and the state Department of
Ecology to design a regional carbon cap and trade plan. She also envisions
the creation of "green collar jobs" programs to provide training and
apprenticeship opportunities.
"Washington can and must do its part to reduce our contribution to global
climate change," the governor said.
Washington would be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of global warming
because of its reliance on hydroelectricity and mountain snow packs, she
said.
