China: Naval Moves Threaten India; Linked to Energy Needs
December 5, 2011
Maritime relations between India and China deteriorated
in November, as China flexed its muscles and threatened
to tighten the “string of pearls” around India. Although
the increased Chinese naval presence is largely an
effort by China to secure energy flows, it has spurred
regional security concerns. India remains better
positioned than China in the Indian Ocean, and can limit
China’s encroachment by focusing on bilateral security
agreements with Australia and avoiding moves that will
antagonize Beijing.
