It doesn't matter one little bit what the Supreme Court decides on the Affordable Care Act!
Recently the Supreme Court agreed to hear oral arguments in March 2012 concerning whether the Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010, is actually constitutional. Conservatives are hoping that the law will be declared unconstitutional. Liberals of course, want just the opposite. But here's the thing: It doesn't matter one little bit what the Supreme Court decides! No matter how the High Court rules in March 2012, health care in this country is and will continue to be an utter and complete disaster for the vast majority of Americans. Millions of Americans already can't get the care they need - and no law will change that. Why? Three big ugly reasons: #1 A Massive Shortage of Qualified Doctors and Nurses Right now, we need about 16,000 more family doctors in the U.S. than we have. That number is rising every year. But that's just a drop in the bucket compared to how many we'll be short if health care reform is fully enacted. Almost half--46%--of primary care physicians say they will quit if Obamacare becomes law. That's an additional 141,163 doctors that won't be there to serve patients. The nursing situation is just as bad. One out of every seven nursing positions goes unfilled--nursing school just can't turn them out fast enough to meet demand. By 2015, just four years from now, it will be one vacancy of every five--or a 20% vacancy rate. You can't possibly get the care you need if there's nobody there to administer it! #2 A Corrupt Political System That Punishes Innovation Since the FDA and AMA are bought and paid for by Big Pharma, it's no wonder that they're biased against any treatments that don't involve expensive pharmaceutical drugs or devices. Safe, effective, and non-invasive treatments that really work are outlawed in the United States. Trying to avoid knee replacement surgery? You might have benefited from one company's innovative treatment pioneered in 2005. Doctors who think outside the box are terrified to try anything new, fearing they'll be stripped of their medical licenses, put out of business, or worst yet, thrown in jail. #3 Profits Are Everything, People Are Nothing If you have insurance, you're at the mercy of bean counters who will seize upon the slightest pretext to deny your claims. And if you don't have insurance and want to pay out of pocket, it's next to impossible to get a straight answer as to what the real price tag is. You have to consent to treatment before you even know how much it will cost you! Passing healthcare reform won't solve these problems. No law can magically produce thousands of qualified doctors and nurses out of thin air. And as long as our elected representatives are bought and paid for by the likes of Big Pharma and powerful lobbies like AMA, true innovation--innovation that would actually cure people--just isn't going to happen. The status quo is far too profitable for entrenched interests. Same goes for transparency of medical costs.
