No sewage discharges allowed on U.S. side of Lake Ontario

Dec. 12 -- The U.S. EPA and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that the United States side of Lake Ontario is now a no discharge zone.

The agencies have completely banned boats from discharging sewage into the lake. The EPA said there are adequate facilities in the area for boats to pump out sewage.

"Lake Ontario provides drinking water to hundreds of thousands of New York residents," said EPA regional administrator Judith Enck, in a statement. "Establishing a no discharge zone for the lake is an important step in cleaning up New York’s treasured water bodies."

The discharge ban was first proposed in May. For more information, visit the EPA online.
