Heinz cuts solid waste nearly in half since 2005

Nov. 14 -- H.J. Heinz Co. has cut solid waste by almost half since 2005, the Pittsburgh-based ketchup and food company said.

The company said it has decreased the amount of solid waste it creates by 45.7% per 100 metric tons of production globally. Heinz said the reduction is for fiscal year 2011, which ended April 27, compared with solid waste generation for the baseline year of 2005.

"Heinz is on track to achieve or surpass our goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, solid landfill waste, energy consumption and water consumption by at least 20% each by fiscal year 2015," Heinz CEO William R. Johnson states in the report.

Information about the reduction is available through the company’s new 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Report that is available on Heinz’s website.
