Illinois issues report on landfill capacitySept. 30 -- Illinois landfills accepted for disposal more than 46.1 million cubic yards of municipal solid waste last year, according to a new report. The Illinois EPA said the state had 43 active landfills in 2010. More than 1 billion cubic yards of landfill capacity was reported as of Jan. 1, down 5.4% from the previous reporting period. "The information we collect for this report provides valuable information for citizens, local governments and for the agency as we develop, implement and enforce regulations to control waste management facilities," said Illinois EPA Interim Director Lisa Bonnett in a statement.
