Survey: most Canadians not recycling used batteries

Oct. 26 -- Almost two-thirds of Canadians are improperly disposing of their used batteries, according to a new survey.

Despite 87% of respondents saying they were aware of the environmental effects of old batteries, 63% of respondents said they did not recycle their batteries or drop them off at hazardous waste centers, according to the survey, which was conducted by Raw Materials Co.

Despite thousands of battery recycling depots at stores across Canada, 76% of people surveyed said they were not aware of the recycling programs. And 74% said they were unaware of any battery drop-off locations in their community.

On a bright note, 81% of Canadians said they would be willing to change their battery-disposal habits if there were greater access to recycling.
