It’s "essentially game over" for the climate

That's what climate scientist James Hansen calls the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. That pipeline would run right through America’s heartland, carrying toxic oil from Canada’s tar sands to oil refineries on Texas' Gulf Coast. The extraction and transportation process associated with tar sands oil would produce more carbon emissions than traditional oil -- while also causing extreme environmental damage along the way.

The final decision on whether or not to allow the pipeline to move forward rests with President Obama, so he needs to hear from us now.

The Keystone XL pipeline would cut through six states: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana. It would pass over a number of environmentally-sensitive areas such as the Ogallala Aquifer, which provides drinking water for millions of Americans and supplies 30% of our nation’s agricultural water.

We've already seen the dangers oil pipelines pose -- in July, an ExxonMobil pipeline spilled more than 40,000 gallons of oil into the Yellowstone River in Montana, an environmental disaster that is still being cleaned up.

A few weeks ago, more than 1,000 dedicated activists were arrested in front of the White House protesting this dangerous pipeline. Now it’s your turn to take action.

Approving the Keystone XL pipeline would run completely counter to the Obama administration’s commitment to reducing dangerous carbon pollution. Yet given Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s comment that she was "inclined" to approve Keystone XL, there is reason to be concerned.

What’s worse is that TransCanada, the company building the pipeline, has a shoddy safety record when it comes to their oil pipelines -- they’ve had a dozen leaks in the last year. In fact, they shut down their pipelines twice in May alone due to oil spills in Kansas and North Dakota.

Thank you for standing up for our environment.
