Regain Connection with the Earth

There is an aspect of survival that involves more than wrestling grizzly bears, eating pine cones and dirt, or living like Rambo in the wild, untamed areas of the country. And while the knowledge and science has been available for centuries that enable us to live a self-reliant lifestyle, the passion for doing so has declined dramatically within our modern society. Because we have been raised on convenience, the several successions of generations with a "TV-dinner" mentality have lost the ability to know where their food comes from or even how to produce it themselves.

Instead of watching people sit around bemoaning the fact that they have lost their connection with the earth and what it means to actually be responsible for their lives, the guests on today's show have spent years trying to educate and help people return to their roots in nature by taking charge of the foods they eat by propagating and growing their own foodstuffs. Brian Brawdy welcomes Robert and Cheryl Moore-Gough, authors of the book The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds.

This books teaches how to collect, save, and cultivate the seeds from more than 300 vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, trees, and shrubs, and the authors thoroughly explain every step in the seed-saving process. There are descriptions of seed biology; tips on how to select plants for the best seeds; and advice on harvesting and cleaning, proper storage and care, and propagating and caring for new seedlings. And today on Off the Grid News, we have the privilege of listening to the learned experiences and wisdom of these two when it comes to saving seed for future use.

Robert Gough is known throughout Montana as "Dr. Bob." He has written 17 gardening books and more than 500 Extension publications. Moore-Gough is the retired Montana Master Gardener instructor and coordinator and state horticulturist with MSU Extension. She has co-authored four gardening books and co-hosts the Northern Garden Tips radio show with Gough. She is currently an assistant adjunct professor of vegetable production at MSU.

There is a lot of valuable information in today's broadcast that we know you won't want to miss, so head on over to Off the Grid Radio and bring your paper and pencil - you'll want to take notes!
