US coal production falls 3.8% on year in week that ended Sept. 3

US coal production totaled about 21 million st in the week ended September 3, the Energy Information Administration said Thursday.

The production estimate, based on railcar loadings, is 0.8% lower than the previous week's estimate and 3.8% below the estimate for the comparable week in 2010, the agency said.

Coal production east of the Mississippi River totaled 8.5 million st, while output west of the Mississippi totaled 12.5 million st, EIA added.

In August, US coal production reached about 93.4 million st, EIA said, down 0.2% from August 2010.

August coal production east of the Mississippi totaled 39 million st, while output west of the Mississippi totaled 54.3 million st, EIA said.
